Heading to a city with a public transit system?
If so, you’re in luck!
Many cities around the world have a cost-effective and reliable system of subway/metro, buses, light rails, and bike shares that can get you from A to B safety and often more quickly than a taxi or Uber/Lyft. For example, in NYC, Washington, DC, or London – the subway/metro/Tube is by far the quickest and cheapest way to get around.
Learning your way around a mass transit system takes a bit of time to learn, but the money you will save makes it well worth your while. Also, many major cities have apps that have the relevant maps and travel planning tools that will help you navigate the system and provide a sense of how long your journey will take.
Another plus to using public transportation is you get a sense of the culture – from how people act on the system to how concerned they are about a train running late (hello Tokyo!). Are they very quiet and reserved? Or are people performing for tips? At worst, it can be an adventure!
Keep in mind many cities offer a reusable card or pass that will save you from buying single-ride tickets. Aside from being good to Mother Earth, the reusable cards often give you a discount on your fare. Info about each city’s pass can be found on their city mass transit page (or drop us a line and we’ll help you out!).
